Traditions vs. Callings

I've tried not to get on my "soap box" but this "post" has been on my heart for quite some time.  I've been searching for the best way to express this and Sunday morning, Pastor Scott helped me put the words together.  One of his points was doing things because God calls us to do them, even if it means going against "Traditions."  With Terry being in his third year of Seminary, I get asked A LOT-- "Where is he going on his internship?"  "What church will he be serving?"  That is the tradition of seminary--three years of study, one year of internship and then on to a church.  That's a fine tradition if that is what God is calling someone to do.  When we say that we feel God calling us to stay in the Twin Cities area to serve in urban ministry/urban outreach, people get taken aback.  I've even had someone say that not taking an internship and church was wasting the years at Seminary.  How is serving the people that need God's love the most a waste?  We may not know "how" God is going to lead us in this area.  We may not have many details at all.  We just know that we are supposed to stay in this area and be ready to serve in how God leads us.  That may not be tradition but it's God calling and we are doing our best to listen and follow.  There...'nuf said, off my soap box....:-)
